Karnataka

Karnataka is a state of diverse topological features, from mountain chains like Mullayyana Giri, plateaus, residual hills and coastal plains to swirling waterfalls at Jog and Sivasamudra. About 20 per cent of the area in the state is under forest cover. Important sanctuaries and national parks of Karnataka state are the Bandipur National Park, Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary, Bhimeshwari, B R Hills, Dandeli, Nagarhole, Ranganathittu Wildlife Sanctuary and Chamundi Hills.

Karnataka state has a rich history out by ruins such as that of the ancient city of Hampi. The powerful dynasties that held sway over the state included the Nandas, the Mauryas, the Rashtrakutas, the Badami Chalukyas, the Hoysalas, the Vijayanagar Kings, the Wodeyars and the duo of Haider Ali and Tipu Sultan. Later, during the years of British rule, the state fell under the Madras Presidency.

The recent years have seen Karnataka move to the forefront of the Information Technology and Biotechnology industries in India, topping the other states in its software exports.
