Gol Gumbaz
The Gol Gumbaz (also called Gola Gummata in Kannada) of Bijapur is one of the famous monuments in Karnataka.
The Gol Gumbaz is considered as the second largest dome in the world, next in size to St. Peter's in Rome. It is 44 m in diameter; the interior of the dome is mysteriously unsupported and has a whispering gallery under it, whose acoustics are superb.
Gol Gumbaz was built by Mohammed Adil Shah (ruled 1627-1657), the seventh ruler of Adil Shahi dynasty. Adil Shah is buried here along with his wife and daughter.
A particular attraction of Gol Gumbaz is the central chamber, where every sound is echoed nine times. Gol Gumbaz complex includes a mosque, a Naqqar Khana and the ruins of guest houses.
